The estate: Joseph’s Legacy is part of Perdeberg’s premium Dry Land Collection. The name pays tribute to Joseph Huskisson, the influential winemaker who worked at Perdeberg from 1956 to 1994. The grapes come from approximately 25-year-old dryland vines, which grow without irrigation on weathered granite, Glenrosa and Malmesbury shale.
Grape varieties: There is a slight discrepancy between sources here. The official Perdeberg product page for the 2023 vintage lists 60% Shiraz, 22% Grenache Noir, 10% Mourvèdre and 8% Cinsault. A CapeWine directory lists 70/10/10/10. For your drinks menu, I would therefore use the official Perdeberg blend of 60/22/10/8.
Tasting notes: A full-bodied, powerful yet elegant red wine with aromas of black pepper, dried herbs, cherries and red berries, complemented by vanilla. On the palate, it is rich and layered, with ripe fruit, spiciness, a firm structure and silky tannins. The finish is long and refined.
Barrel ageing: no less than 18 months in 300- and 500-litre French oak barrels, 20 per cent of which are new French oak and the rest older barrels. The wine is then bottle-aged for a further 12 to 18 months before being released.
Food pairing: Ideal with grilled steak, lamb, spicy game, beef casserole and BBQ. Perdeberg specifically mentions flame-grilled rump steak, spicy venison and beef casserole. It also pairs surprisingly well with a richly spiced butter chicken.
A premium Rhône blend from Paarl, composed of Shiraz, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Aromas of cherries and red berries are complemented by black pepper, dried herbs and subtle vanilla. Eighteen months’ ageing in French oak barrels lends extra depth and complexity. Full-bodied and powerful yet elegant, with silky tannins and a long, spicy finish. Excellent with grilled beef, lamb, game and hearty stews.
