The estate: Bodega Ozalder is a small family-run business in Larraga, Navarre. The family uses only grapes from its own vineyards. The vineyards are situated in the central part of Navarre, including the areas around Larraga, Oteiza and Villatuerta.
Grape varieties: Specifically for the 2021 vintage, Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah are listed. The producer and D.O. Navarra only mention Tempranillo and Syrah on the current product sheet, so the blend appears to have been adjusted over the years. For your bottle of 2021, I would therefore stick to the three grape varieties
Taste profile: A smooth and fruit-forward red wine with a cherry-red colour. On the nose, there is plenty of ripe red fruit, particularly strawberry, cherry and blackberry, complemented by floral nuances. On the palate, it is round and quite full-bodied, with juicy fruit, soft tannins and a recognisable hint of liquorice on the finish.
Barrel ageing: 4 months in 225-litre French oak barrels. A medium toast is used, so that the wood does not overpower the fruitiness.
Food pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled beef, veal, poultry, pork, pasta with meat sauce, tapas and semi-hard cheeses. Its supple, fruity character makes it a versatile red wine at the table.
A supple and fruit-forward red from Navarra, made from Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah. Aromas of ripe cherries, strawberries and blackberries are complemented by floral nuances and a subtle hint of liquorice. Four months’ ageing in French oak barrels adds extra roundness and structure without overpowering the fruit. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate with soft tannins and a pleasant finish. Delicious with grilled meat, poultry, tapas and cheeses.
